Mels Boom: Inspiring ceramic artists since1999

Mels Boom

Mels Boom (Nijmegen, the Netherlands, 1943) is a designer, ceramic artist and writer. He studied design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven (1970) and Law at Utrecht University (1979). He also specialised in marketing (1983) and organised an international design award (1999-2005). His passion is ‘expressing himself’ by means of ceramics, painting and photography.

Mels Boom is and has been also active in other areas of ceramics: he was webmaster of, Dutch ceramics link site, chairman of the Clay & Hobby Foundation and he was editor of the Dutch ceramic magazine KLEI. In this magazine for amateur and professional ceramists he wrote mainly on technical subjects. An example of his writing is his series on Decoration Techniques. With these articles Ihe endeavours to inspire readers and stimulate them to ‘step outside their ceramic frame of mind’.

His three books on decorating techniques and basic techniques have all been published.
